Eagerness to expand on its already growing Chinese travel market should be met with patience, according to an industry expert, who described China as a tourism marathon, not a sprint.
Although Auckland Airport expects its Chinese visitor numbers to develop from 160,000 per year today to 430,000 by 2020, TravConsult international customer service and tourism development specialist Trevor Lee said attracting the growing market will require long-term work.
“There is no fast-track approach or shortcut to winning the hearts and minds of Chinese consumers and potential travellers,” he said.
“They are fortunate to have the world at their feet via the internet, social media and the recommendations of e-WOM (electronic word of mouth).”
With ongoing campaigns underway woo Chinese visitors, Auckland Airport also recently hosted workshops to educate the local industry on the ‘Chinese’ ways.
“Tourism professionals who attended the three-day series of Auckland Airport workshops now have a toolkit and clear insight into effective strategies to compete in the global market for the Chinese outbound market,” TravConsult’s Lilly Choi-Lee added.
Workshops were held in Auckland, Rotorua and Queenstown earlier this month with up to 100 industry representatives in attendance.
