Michele De Witt, Director of the South African office of Horwath HTL, has been elected as Chairperson of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa – responsible for the Western and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa.
The Association was established in 1949 and is recognised by decision and policy makers in government and the industry as the official voice of the Southern Africa hospitality industry. The role of the association is to seek growth as an inclusive industry and promote the development and growth of a sustainable trading environment. As such they engage and lobby both local, provincial and national government regarding policy that affects the industry and have successfully affected change in legislation passed over the years.
The Association holds a membership in these two regions in excess of 700 segmented into five groups: hotels, small accommodation, restaurants & catering, allied/ supplier members, and a youth segment that Michele was involved in establishing about two/ three years ago. Her election as the regional chairperson also has a requirement to fulfil a seat on the National Board of the Association.
Michele said, “I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to serve the hospitality industry in Southern African and to keep hospitality in the forefront of businesses driving growth in the region. The performance of the hospitality sector is incredibly important to the wider economy and we need to have the support of local and regional government in making sure we have the best environment to train, support and growth all areas of the industry. I am looking forward to using the role to reach out to business leaders accrooss the region and support the efforts of the many thousands of hospitality industry colleagues.”
