Derry named as one of the top cities in the world for 2013

One of the best cities to visit in the world next year is Derry/Londonderry. This is according to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013, the highly anticipated eighth annual collection of the best places to go and things to do around the world for the year ahead, from the world’s most successful travel content provider.

The book states, ‘Derry/Londonderry is the UK City of Culture 2013, which means this vibrant historic walled city is undergoing a renaissance.’ Derry was placed as the fourth best city to visit next year by a panel of travel experts, behind San Francisco, Amsterdam and Hyderabad. Derry’s selection was based on its 2013 calendar of cultural events, as the city celebrates the 400th anniversary of its city walls and hosts the prestigious Turner Prize. The book also credits the city’s impressive redevelopment as a reason to consider a visit.

Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall contributed to the book, and says ‘Best in Travel is all about identifying destinations which offer the traveller something special. Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene.
